Loveable Freak Reviews: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Ugh! I've been sick the last three days, and I'm quite sick tired of it! Oh, well. I decided to take advantage of staying in bed today and desided to finally get around to watching something I've really been meaning to see,  Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog!

The behind-the-scenes story of this musical is simple: Joss Whedon (the genius who wrote and directed the super-special-awesomeness that is The Avengers movie (and apparently helped co-write Toy Story... holy crap this dude is awesome!), along with his brothers, Jack and Zed, and his sister-in-law Maurissa Tancharoen had an idea. They decided, during the time of the 2007 Writer's Guild Strike, that they would make something. A small, inexpensive, yet professionally-done project, avoiding the problems that were being protested at the time. The result was a three-act web miniseries, called Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. The whole thing was done out of Joss's own pocket, and everyone did it despite the fact they weren't going to be paid at the time. (Of course, they later released it on iTunes and on DVD, so in the end everyone got paid. Heck, they still made a profit.)

Anyway, the musical revolves around aspiring supervillian Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris), who is trying to get into the supervillian group known as The Evil League of Evil. He has, of course, a video blog documenting his schemes and answering fanmail. Outside of his attempted villiany (in his mild-mannered alter ego, Billy), he tries unsuccessfully to get the girl of his dreams, Penny (played by Felicia Day). But when Dr. Horrible's nemisis, the superhero Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillion), "rescues" Penny, and proceeds to go out with her... well...

Thank you, River...

...let's just say the end result's not pretty and leave it at that, shall we?

I liked this musical. It's a really good story. It manages to get what could be a whole movie across in 42 minutes all together. The ending is really sad, but I won't share why. Dr. Horrible is quite sympathetic. And I can see where Dr. Horrible's motivations are coming from. Plus, I'm a fan of Neil Patrick Harris, and he does great job. We also have Captain Hammer, who is the exact opposite. But luckily, Nathan Fillion is able to make him at least a likable kind of horrible (no pun intended). And the love interest, Penny, is likable, too.

But the big thing here is the music!  I really like the songs here, which is good for any musical. The ones that really stand out (that I like the most) are "My Freeze Ray", both versions of "Bad Horse Chorus", "Brand New Day", and the final song "Everything You Ever" is pretty good, too. I'll definitely buy the soundtrack on iTunes.

  So, some last minute thoughts:
  • My only problem is that it's so short. Yes, it's good and gets everything across. And yes, there's no padding. But still, I'd expected it to be longer. But, there is going to be a sequel, so...
  • I am quite dissapointed in The Avengers fandom, specifically the Loki fans, after watching this/hearing the soundtrack. Seriously? With the big deal y'all make over the fact Loki changed into a horse and got pregnant in Norse Mythology, you've neglected to make a "Bad Horse" video with Loki on YouTube? For shame! We have ones for Moriarty from Sherlock, The Master from Doctor Who, and waaaay too many for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, but no Loki yet? Tsk, tsk. I thought I knew you, fandom. (Note: I don't check Tumblr, so there might be one there. If you've seen one, readers who are on Tumblr, let me know)
Well, that's all I have to say. Sing me out, Neil Patrick Harris!

Proof of Darren Criss's Awesomeness

So, I watched Glee last night and was a little lost as to the plot, 'cause I missed some episodes. Anyway, that's irrelevant. Afterwards, I had to make this:

That is all. Now I leave you with the awesome "Smooth Criminal" cover from the episode.

Why Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows Needs An Award

Okay, so sooner or later, awards season will be upon us. Ya know, the Oscars, the Golden Globes, blah blah blah.... And there's one movie I feel needs to win, or at least get some nominations. Thor! Just kidding!  Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows!

Why? Well I'll tell ya why!

  1. The Story. It's just plain awesome. Even better than the first. And the ending is pretty cool, too. I won't give much away. But at first, you'll be like: "No, that's not how they're going to..." Then you'll be like, "Wait, they're going through with this?" Then at the end you'll probably be like "YAY!" And it leaves things open for a sequel. Let's just leave it at that.

    2. Robert Downey Jr. He knocks it out of the park again reprising his role as Sherlock Holmes. He won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy Or Musical for the last one, so let's hope he goes two for two. And maybe get an Oscar nom. Please?

    3. The Music. After Danny Elfman, I think Hans Zimmer's probably one of my favorite movie music composers. And the soundtrack for this one shows why. It's pretty cool. It fits the movie so well. I think I might ACTUALLY get the soundtrack. Hopefully this year it gets something for the soundtrack. (I admit last time I pulled for Up, 'cause, you know, it was the only animated movie up for the nomination, and was a good movie, too, in it's own right).

  Here's a sample:

Anyway, hopefully it gets some awards, because seriously, this was an AWESOME movie. And I want to see nice things happen to it. It's getting a sequel, so come on!

That is all.

Glee Song Wish List

So, yeah... I got this idea of posting the songs I want Glee to cover someday. So, let's see how this'll go...

  • Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People It would be cool. I would kind of like Kurt (Chris Colfer) to do it because 1) Kurt's awesome, 2) He's going to leave the show at the end of season 3, better now then a potential guest starring in a future episode, and 3)It would be a nice break from the OVER 9,000 show tunes he sings. Just sayin'...  AND MAYBE HE'LL GO ON A NINJA RAMPAGE AS HE SINGS IN A FANTASY SEQUENCE!!!!
          .....
          ..A girl can dream.....

  • Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap I'm picturing either the Glee boys or the Warblers (just cuz I love me some Warblers/a cappella) doing this. There'd better not be any Auto-Tune! The Auto-Tune is annoying in the song. Okay, I only want this for potential Glee "Dear Sister" Parodies...
  • OINGO BOINGO! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE LET IT BE AWESOME! Maybe Puck (Mark Salling) or Artie (Kevin McHale) (or Kurt or Blaine (Darren Criss) :))
  • More Blaine. Nuff' Said.
Eh... This is pointless. Pointless? THIS! IS! FILLER! Yeah, I mostly got stuff for the dudes. What can I say? I like a lot of male artists, and I got nothin' for the girls. So there... Don't question me...

Oingo Boingo = One of the Best Bands Ever

Ahh, the 80's. Home of thousands of songs about cheating on one's significant other ("Pina Colada", anyone?), and one fantastic band, called Oingo Boingo.

Oingo Boingo is the band Danny Elfman (AKA The Dude Who Composes The Songs For Nearly Every Tim Burton Movie EVER) came from. They made such fantastic songs as:

  • Weird Science
  • Only A Lad
  • Dead Man's Party
  • Nothing Bad Ever Happens
.....And MORE! I love their sound, ESPICIALLY Danny Elfman's voice.  When I heard some of A Thorn For Every Heart's cover of "Dead Man's Party", I smiled at how that band's singer tried to match Elfman's inflictions. Anyway, I love Oingo Boingo's songs.

Here's one of their songs. EDUCATE AND CULTURE YOURSELVES, YOUNG CHILDREN!

*sigh* Did I mention I love Oingo Boingo and Danny Elfman music?
